Electricity is a hot topic for any South African household over the last couple of years. If you are anything like us we have done all we can to be energy smart from moving to energy saving light bulbs, geyser blankets, switching off the geyser when possible etc.Once you have reached this plateau you start looking at alternative energy sources such as solar energy. We are busy assessing the possibility of switching to or incorporating solar energy into our home. Unfortunately, the high cost of solar panels makes this solution less feasible. Taking 20 years to recover your investment that will most likely need to be replaced in 10 years does not seem like a smart financial move. There are some innovations on the horizon that provides some hope of making solar energy more cost efficient. This includes anything from electronic skin, roof shingles to solar cells inspired by a fly eye and a moth's eye.
