Business Leaders Labor Utilities Farmers And Conservationists Hail Clean Energy Jobs Act Bill
MADISON - Prominent business leaders, labor representatives, farmers, health advocates, faith leaders, energy providers, and environmentalists were among residents from across the state who gathered at a public hearing held in the State Capitol today to ask their elected leaders to support and strengthen the Clean Energy Jobs Act.
"The diversity of support for this legislation is overwhelming," said Ryan Schryver, Clean Energy Advocate at Clean Wisconsin, the state's largest environmental advocacy organization. "People from all walks of life gathered today to ask legislators to create jobs, clean our environment, protect our health, and support energy independence by passing this bill."
The Clean Energy Jobs Act holds the potential to be an economic boon for Wisconsin, creating demand for energy efficiency projects, putting residents to work harvesting wind and solar power, and creating markets for farmers to grow and sell biofuels.
According to an analysis performed by the Office of Energy Independence, the current version of the bill will create over 15,000 jobs for Wisconsinites in the construction and manufacturing industries alone. Strengthening the bill could lead to even greater job creation.
"We cannot afford to continue draining our economy by exporting billions on expensive, dirty fossil fuels," said Schryver. "Residents gathered today to say 'enough is enough' and demand that we create jobs and start investing in our own state by producing clean energy right here at home."
"The Coalition for Clean Energy which includes Clean Wisconsin also made several suggested improvements to the Clean Energy Jobs Act bill:"

Hudson Company Sets Minnesota Solar Standard
A Minnesota first is unfolding this month on the rooftop of a Vadnais Heights social service agency, where 525 solar panels are being installed to take energy conservation to new heights.
When completed this month, the largest solar electric project in the state will sit atop an agency best known for helping adults with disabilities. State officials say it will increase Minnesota's solar capacity by 10 percent.
What's even more unusual is that the rooftop rays will fuel a geothermal energy system hidden below the concrete parking lot of the building, home to Merrick Inc., a nonprofit that is making its energy production -- and its own products -- a Minnesota model of green.
"We've married two emerging technologies, geothermal and solar, in a commercial setting,' said John Wayne Barker, executive director of Merrick Inc. "We've taken an ugly duckling -- this building -- and turned it into a swan. Hopefully we'll inspire others to do the same.'
The 100-kilowatt project reflects the rise of large-scale solar experiments in Minnesota, said Stacy Miller, solar administrator at the Minnesota Office of Energy Security. Of the 250 or so solar installations, the average-sized project is just four kilowatts, she said.From the newsletter of Energy Concepts:
With the help of Energy Concepts, the Merrick building in Vadnais Heights, recently broke a record for solar installations in Minnesota. Lined up on its flat roof just south of St. Paul, 108 solar modules are daily converting the sun's energy into electricity. The 130,000 kilowatts it is expected to generate annually will be the highest ever for a single Minnesota project and represents fully 10% of installed solar capacity in the Gopher State.
Designed by Energy Concept's Craig Tarr, the solar installation powers the company's underground geo-thermal system, which provides most of the building's heating and cooling.
"It's a biggie," Tarr says, "and represents a new level of achievement in terms of combining solar and geo-thermal at one site. Senator Klobuchar, the Governor-they have VIPs visiting that site almost every day."
Minnesota and Wisconsin, despite their stereotype of being cold and dark, actually, according to Tarr, have excellent overall solar potential.

Jauch Sherman Talk Clean Energy Jobs In Ashland
ASHLAND, WIS. - Wisconsin Politicians say new renewable energy Standards could be the key to creating more jobs.
It's called the Clean Energy Jobs Act, and the final public hearing was today in Ashland.
Local folks and political figures gathered at the Northern Great Lakes Visitor's Center to voice their opinions regarding its changes.
"We would be remiss to ignore the opportunities presented by this bill," State Senator Bob Jauch said, speaking at the hearing. "These are the kinds of initiatives that could create jobs in Wisconsin and protect our environment."
If adopted by Wisconsin's state legislature in April, proponents say The Clean Energy Jobs Act would Create At Least 15,000 Green Jobs by 2025 in Wisconsin.
According to Senator Jauch, the bill's major changes would include new statewide goals for greenhouse gas emissions, improved state funding for renewable energy resources, and strict new requirements for Wisconsin-based renewable energy to flow through the municipal grid.
Jauch and State Representative Gary Sherman say those new requirements should result in better funding for a larger renewable energy industry and more renewable energy jobs too.
Tourism and forestry are our two main industries in the area and they are linked together by this environment," Sherman said. "If we can find a way to produce jobs, to produce industry, to produce economic development without destroying that resource, than we are looking at a bright future," Sherman added.
Local residents largely agreed, speaking for or against various points on the proposed bill.
"I was happy to present to Senator Jauch today a petition in support of this bills signed by more than 150 area residents," said community organizer Bill Busse from Bayfield. "So it has strong grassroots support in our area."
However, several speakers vocally opposed the bill's most controversial measure, a resolution reversing the moratorium on new nuclear energy development throughout Wisconsin.

Cenovus is providing 2.5 million to Saltworks Technologies Inc. and 3.8 million to General Fusion.Saltworks, based in Vancouver, has developed an energy efficient way to convert salt water into fresh water through desalination. The company's technology removes salt from seawater and underground saline (brackish) water by harnessing low-temperature heat provided by solar energy or waste heat from power generation, which reduces the amount of mechanical and/or electrical energy required. Potential applications for Saltworks' technology include processing water for industry, as well as producing drinking water for communities and irrigation water for agriculture.
"Water is a precious resource and its availability is a critical issue around the world," said Judy Fairburn, Executive Vice-President of Environment and Strategic Planning at Cenovus. "The ability to convert saline water into usable fresh water could change how we use water in our operations and provide communities with sustainable, safe sources of water."
